It's 4 p.m. on a Tuesday in July, your indoor thermometer reads 88°F, and the air coming out of your vents is noticeably warm — not cool, not neutral, but warm. Outside it's 112°F. You have a dog, maybe a grandparent visiting, and zero interest in waiting three days for a service window. Before you panic or commit to an emergency call you might not need, work through this triage list. Some of these fixes take two minutes. Others confirm that yes, you absolutely need a licensed technician — and the sooner the better.
1. Check the Thermostat First (Seriously)
It sounds obvious, but this is the number-one cause of "warm air" calls we get in the Las Vegas metro every summer. Someone bumped the thermostat to HEAT, or the fan mode was switched from AUTO to ON. When the fan runs continuously on ON, it pushes air through the ducts even when the compressor isn't actively cooling — so you feel room-temperature or warm air at the register.
- Set the mode to COOL, not HEAT or EM HEAT.
- Set the fan to AUTO, not ON.
- Set the setpoint at least 3–5°F below the current room temperature so the compressor actually kicks on.
- If you have a smart thermostat, check the app — a schedule change or "away" mode can silently raise the setpoint by 10°F or more.
Give the system five minutes after correcting settings. If cold air returns, you're done. If not, keep going.
2. Check the Breaker Panel
Your AC system typically uses two separate breakers: one for the air handler (indoor unit) and one for the condenser (outdoor unit). If the condenser breaker tripped — which happens often during July monsoon storms that roll through Henderson, Summerlin, and North Las Vegas — the blower fan inside keeps running while the compressor outside is dead. Result: warm air moving through your house.
Go to your main electrical panel and look for any breaker that's in the middle "tripped" position rather than fully ON or fully OFF. Reset it once by flipping it fully OFF, then back ON. If it trips again immediately, stop. A breaker that keeps tripping is protecting you from a wiring or compressor fault — don't force it. That's a call for our technicians.
3. Inspect the Air Filter
Las Vegas air is brutal on filters. Between the construction dust in Centennial Hills, the desert particulates that blow in during haboobs, and the sheer volume of hours your system runs (a Vegas AC can log 2,000+ operating hours per year), filters clog fast. A severely restricted filter starves the evaporator coil of airflow, which leads directly to the next problem on this list.
Pull the filter and hold it up to light. If you can't see light through it, it's overdue. Replace it with the same MERV rating your system specifies — usually MERV 8 to 11 for residential units. Don't upsize to a MERV 13 or higher without confirming your air handler can handle the extra static pressure. After replacing, give the system 20–30 minutes to recover before re-evaluating airflow.

4. Look for a Frozen Evaporator Coil
A blocked filter or low refrigerant causes the evaporator coil inside your air handler to drop below freezing and ice over. Once it ices, airflow drops to almost nothing and the air that does get through feels warm or just slightly cool. You may also notice water dripping around the indoor unit as the ice melts, or frost visible on the refrigerant line running to the outdoor unit.
Here's what you can do safely:
- Turn the thermostat to FAN ONLY (or set the system to OFF but the fan to ON). This runs warm air across the coil to melt the ice without compressor damage.
- Put towels down around the air handler — there will be water.
- Wait 2–4 hours for a full thaw.
- Replace the filter if you haven't already.
- Restart the system and monitor for 30 minutes.
If the coil ices again within a few hours, a dirty filter is not the root cause. You likely have a refrigerant issue or an airflow problem that requires professional diagnosis. Do not keep restarting a system that keeps freezing — you risk damaging the compressor.
5. Recognize the Signs of a Refrigerant Leak
Refrigerant is the substance that actually moves heat out of your home. When the charge is low — almost always because of a leak somewhere in the system, not because refrigerant "runs out" on its own — the system loses its ability to absorb heat and your air comes out warm or barely cool. You cannot top off refrigerant yourself legally or safely; it requires an EPA 608-certified technician.
Warning signs that point to a refrigerant issue rather than a filter or thermostat problem:
- The outdoor condenser runs continuously but the house never reaches setpoint, even at night.
- You hear a hissing or bubbling sound near the indoor or outdoor unit.
- Ice on the refrigerant lines (combined with a clean filter and good airflow).
- The copper suction line (the larger, insulated line) is not cold to the touch when the system is running.
- Higher-than-normal electric bills without a change in usage habits.
